International Seminar "Nuclear Energy and the Development of Nonproliferation Culture: Covering New Regions" 23.06.2011
On June 23, 2011 The PIR Center held an international seminar called "Nuclear Energy and the Cultural Development of Nonproliferation: Covering New Regions" at the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) The seminar was attended by representatives of over 20 countries, including high-ranking members of the diplomatic corps and the management of national nuclear companies and research institutions.
After the occurrences at the Japanese nuclear power plant "Fukushima-1" there were concerns that the development of nuclear power in the world would abruptly stop. However, this thesis has not been seriously developed. As Director of International Cooperation Department of the State Corporation "Rosatom" Mikhail Lysenko noted: "Statements about curtailing national peaceful nuclear programs were made by countries that have either already planned such measures, or have not yet started to develop nuclear energy. At the same time, all the other key players - the United States, Russia, and even Japan - have said they will continue to develop nuclear energy. This is the first and most important conclusion from the Ministerial Conference held in Vienna."
It is noteworthy that in the world today there is a consensus about the need for atomic energy. According to the Deputy Chairman of the National Atomic Energy Agency of Indonesia, Tasvandy Tario, "For the majority of states the establishment of nuclear power plants will contribute to diversification of the energy sources and strengthen their resources for energy security and climate change mitigation. Construction of nuclear power plants should not only allow for an optimum structure for national power, but should also mitigate market pressures generated by the demand for oil and natural gas, as well as to promote the objectives of sustainable development. "
