Developments of PIR Center Middle East project

p7339_1.jpgMOSCOW, JULY 26, 2012. PIR PRESS – “There is little time left before the Conference on the establishment of WMD-free zone in the Middle East at the end of 2012. In our opinion, we should take more practical steps to get a draft document. Nowadays it is important to establish the dialogue between countries of the region – not between individual countries and facilitator of the Conference Mr. Laajava, not between Russia and the United States, but to bring all parties together for joint brainstorming, teamwork. The individual contribution of each state, including Iran, Israel and any other, would be highly welcome”, - Director of the Security and Disarmament Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry Mikhail Ulyanov.

PIR Center continues its work on the project Russia and the Middle East: promoting strategic interests. The project covers the problems of the Middle East WMD-free zone as well as nuclear energy development in the region. In the framework of the project an agreement on cooperation was signed between PIR Center and leading research organization in the Middle East - Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, headed by Ambassador Mohamed Shaker. In addition, endures cooperation between PIR Center and Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

p7339_3.jpgAt the recently concluded first session of the Preparatory Committee for the NPT Review Conference in Vienna, the issue of the Middle East WMD-free zone was among the crucial points of discussion. In the Security Index Journal № 101 (Summer 2012) an interview with the Head of the Russian delegation (in Russian), Director of the Security and Disarmament Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Mikhail Ulyanov was published. The interview presented the official position, as well as new Russian proposals on this issue.

In the same issue of the journal an article by Giacomo Luciani  (in Russian) Nuclear Energy in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf: what is the usefulness? was published. Previously, PIR Center has published an article  (in Russian) Nuclear Energy in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf by Awad Al-Badi.

On October 4, 2012 PIR Center host the international workshop “2012 Conference on the WMD-free zone in the Middle East – searching for solutions” in the framework of the Middle East project. Representatives of nuclear companies, regional experts, governmental and UN officials are invited to participate in the workshop. Proceedings of the discussions will also be available to readers of the Security Index Journal.
