The conclusion of PIR Center and MGIMO University Joint Module “WMD Nonproliferation and International Security”

19.12.2013

MOSCOW, DECEMBER 19, 2013. PIR PRESS – “The realm of international security, which was in your focus during this module, is constantly evolving and changing. However this obstacle makes it even more interesting to follow. And it will require a lot of time and effort from you to succeed in this highly competitive field,” – Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Ryabkov.

On December 18, 2013 the last lecture from the PIR Center and MGIMO-University Joint Educational Module “WMD Nonproliferation and Global Security” was held. This day the students also passed the final examination and participated in the debates entitled “Will the world without nuclear weapons be a safer place?”

Today the issue of reconsideration of the role of nuclear weapons in the contemporary world is crucial. Debates organized under the supervision of PIR Center experts did a good job highlighting the importance of this issue. Both affirmative and negative teams came well prepared to defend their positions, while remaining participants expressed their views during the discussion.

In the framework of the Educational Module the students attended the lectures by Assistant Professor of the Department of International Relations and Russian Foreign Policy of the MGIMO-University Ildar Akhtamzyan, PIR Center Senior Vice President Evgeny Buzhinsky, Director of the International Center for Nuclear Education Viktor Murogov, and PIR Center President Vladimir Orlov.

The students got the valuable insights on WMD nonproliferation (including regional aspects of the issue), arms control, history of nuclear weapons and nuclear weapon doctrines, as well as prospects for peaceful nuclear energy development and key problems of the issue.

As a part of the course Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Security Index Journal Editorial Board member Sergey Ryabkov delivered a lecture on “International Security and Nonproliferation in the Context of Russian Relations with the USA and New Power Centers”. However during the Q&A session students were mostly interested in recent P5+1 talks on Iranian nuclear problem in Geneva where Mr. Ryabkov represented Russian side. At the end of his lecture Deputy Foreign Minister addressed the students with the following words: “The realm of international security, which was in your focus during this module, is constantly evolving and changing. However, this obstacle makes it even more interesting to follow. And it will require a lot of time and effort from you to succeed in this highly competitive field”.

Full text of the lecture is available at PIR Center website.
