Call for nominations for PIR Center Awards


MOSCOW, SEPTEMBER 5, 2014. PIR PRESS – On October 4, 2014, PIR Center will announce honorary awards for strengthening the WMD nonproliferation regime.

The globes of PIR Center are awarded to the Russian and foreign statesmen and community leaders, scholars, experts, journalists and philanthropists, that have significantly contributed to the strengthening of the nuclear nonproliferation regime, addressing particular nonproliferation challenges, developing education and research activities in the nonproliferation realm. First globes were awarded in 2004 for PIR Center 10th anniversary. The second ceremony took place in 2009.  

Among the PIR Center laureates: Directors General of the IAEA Hans Blix (1981-1997) and Mohamed ElBaradei (1997-2009), one of the fathers of the NPT Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Roland Timerbaev, generals Evgeny Maslin and Gennady Evstafiev, scholars, lecturers and journalists Ildar Akhtamzyan, William Potter and David Hoffman, heads of companies and governmental officials that promoted international cooperation on peaceful application of nuclear energy and nonproliferation Alexander Rumyantsev, Nikolay Spassky and Rose Gottemoeller. For his role in promoting the ideas of Nuclear-Weapon-Free World, the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev was awarded PIR Center prize in 2009. We also single out young scholars and diplomats who are “The New Talents in Nonproliferation”. Nikita Perfilyev who received his globe in 2009 continues his career at the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.

In 2014, we follow the tradition and announce the following nominations for the awards ceremony of October 4: 

  • For Strengthening the Nonproliferation Regime;
  • For Professional Coverage of the Issues of Nonproliferation, Regional and Global Security;    
  • For Educating the New Generation in the Area of Nonproliferation;
  • For Continuing Support to Nonproliferation Research, Education and Publishing;
  • The New Talents in Nonproliferation.

We invite our colleagues from across the world to propose candidates for the nominations until September 20.
