22.10.2014

MOSCOW, OCTOBER 22, 2014.  PIR PRESS – “The CyberModule classes at the PIR Center International School gave me a powerful professional boost and allowed me to become acquainted with leading Russian information security and internet governance experts.  I especially anticipated lectures with focus on the Runet regulation, analysis of identification on the internet and other topics; such lectures fully lived up to all expectations.  I awant to note the importance of the debates and other interactive exercises, which give impetus to further independent study of these issues,” – Olga Bogdanovich, Ph.D. student in the department of Russian, Slavic and General Linguistics at Taurida National V.I.Vernadsky University.

On October 6-7, 2014, at the PIR Center International School on Global Security, a series of lectures and interactive sessions took place. These courses occurred within the CyberModule thematic block and were dedicated to international information security and global internet governance.

23 students who serve as young employees of diplomatic and other government agencies, research centers and universities in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and South Ossetia, took part in the program.

In the framework of the CyberModule classes, students were introduced to expert views on the development of internet infrastructure, the transformation of the architecture of global internet governance and global identification on the internet, ensuring information security of critical facilities, countering of modern cyber threats, and prevention of international conflicts in cyberspace.

The following leading Russian experts served as the program lecturers: director of the PIR Center Program “International Information Security and Global Internet Governance” Oleg Demidov;, the Head of the Strategic Elaborations Department at the Russian Association of Electronic Communications Irina Levova;; Business Consultant on Information Security at Cisco Systems Alexey Lukatsky; Chairman of the Board at the  Coordination Center for Top Level Domains .RU/.РФ Mikhail Medrish;  Vice President of Stakeholder Engagement for Eastern Europe, Russia, And Central Asia at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Michael Yakushev; and the Head of Government Relations and Strategic Projects at Kaspersky Lab Andrey Yarnykh.

The round table, “Prevention of Military Conflicts in the Information Space, Warning of the Development and Application of Informational Weapons: Defining Practical Measures,” also served as part of the CyberModule. The Director of the International Organization of Election Observation at CIS-EMO, Alexander Bedritsky; the Head of the independent think tank “Epoch”, Igor Popov; PIR Center Advisory Board Member, Alexander Fedorov and the Deputy Head of the independent think tank “Epoch”, Musa Khamzatov all took part in the exercise.

Students greatly appreciated the format and substantive content of the program and especially emphasized the highly qualified lecturing staff, the wide range of topics and the severe nature of issues analyzed. Sharing her impressions of the PIR Center International School, Ph.D. student at the Department of Russian, Slavic and General Linguistics at Taurida National V.I. Vernadsky University, Olga Bogdanovich pointed out: “The CyberModule classes at the PIR Center International School gave me a powerful professional boost and allowed me to become acquainted with leading Russian information security and internet governance experts.  I especially anticipated lectures with focus on the Runet regulation, analysis of identification on the internet and other topics; such lectures fully lived up to all expectations. I want to note the importance of the debates and other interactive exercises, which give impetus to further independent study of these issues.”

Lecturers also gave positive reviews to the thematic block of the PIR Center’s International School.  The Head of Strategic Projects at Kaspersky Lab, Andrey Yarnykh stressed: “The level of student preparation within the CyberModule was traditionally high. Active, live feedback from students regarding the expert presentations, the intense and intelligent questions show that there were no random people among those that PIR Center gathered.  After each presentation there exists an atmosphere of positive feedback and accompanied by the assurance that the students will apply the outlined material to their work and that said material will be extremely useful to them. I thank PIR Center for the opportunity to participate as well as for its excellent organization of this event.”

PIR Center actively develops research and training projects on information and communication technologies within the context of international security in the framework of the Program “International Information Security and Global Internet Governance”. On March 17-19, 2014, PIR Center held the training course “Global Internet Governance and International Cybersecurity for Young Experts” in Moscow, in which 14 young experts from Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan participated.

Also as part of the Program, PIR Center publishes the electronic journal, The CyberPulse.  In 2013, a thematic issue of the PIR Center Index Security journal №1 (104) 2013, “Global Security in the Digital Age” came out of print.
