Students of the Dual Degree Master's Program in the field of Nonproliferation participated in the discussion in the State Duma

MOSCOW, JANUARY 17, 2018. PIR PRESS - "Later, when these young people occupy responsible positions, the experience of this team work will push them to think bigger and make smarter decisions in the interests of international security ", – Inga Yumasheva, the Deputy of the State Duma.

On January 10, 2018 at the invitation of Inga Yumasheva, Member of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament  State Duma, coordinator of the parliamentary group for relations with the US Congress, the students of the Dual Degree Master Program in Nonproliferation   (MGIMO – PIR Center – Middlbuery Instittute of International Studies in Monterey) visited the house of the Russian Parliament at Okhotny Ryad street.

The participants of the meeting shared impressions from staying in Russia and the USA and discussed how to improve the relations between the two countries.


So, William Shimanski, student of the course, said: "the Program performs the main function – it allows American and Russian students to establish contact and overcome stereotypes about each other. While training in Russia, I was impressed by the fact that it is actually not much different between us, and we all have the strong desire to find mutual understanding."

The meeting was attended by Sergey Pospelov, First Deputy Chief of Staff of the State Duma, who stressed the importance of not only personal interactions and also implementation of joint projects by the young experts, that creates a shared success story.

The discussion was followed by a tour of the building of the State Duma, where students learned about the history of parliamentarism in Russia. At the end of the visit, the participants had a unique opportunity to personally see the holding of a plenary session of the lower house of the Russian Parliament.

All participants of the meeting were greatly impressed with the attention to the students’ opinions and genuine interest, the openness, the desire to show the workflow and the excellent organization of the event. 

Member of the State Duma, Inga Yumasheva, said that as coordinator of the parliamentary group for relations with the US Congress she was "deeply convinced of the need for dialogue between Russia and the USA not only at the parliamentary level, but also on educational and scientific one". According to the parliamentarian, "this dual degree program allows students from Russia and the United States to work together in one team." The MP expressed the hope that "later, when these young people occupy responsible positions, the experience of this team work will push them to think bigger and make smarter decisions in the interests of international security".
