On June 25, within the framework of the XXI International School on Global Security, a traditional meeting of PIR Alumni Community members took place. Colleagues, friends and partners of PIR Center, all those who motivate us to move on with their successes and achievements, support and care, gathered in Zvenigorod, Moscow region. For the first time in the history of PIR Center and the School, a meeting of members of PIR Alumni Community was held in the format of MASLIN-FEST – in honor of Evgeny P. Maslin, Colonel General (Ret.), head of the 12th Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, member of PIR Center Executive Board. With this meeting, we wanted to honor the memory of Evgeny Maslin not only as a talented statesman, patriot of his country, reliable colleague and comrade, but also as a lover of poetry, a lover of a song, a lover of warm friendly meetings.

On June 29, 2022, the final exam and the procedure for defending master's theses were held for the students of the 5th cohort (2020-2022) of the International Dual Degree M.A. Program Global Security, Nuclear Policy and WMD Nonproliferation (implemented jointly by PIR Center, MGIMO University and Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, USA, MIIS). Students Sarah Erickson and Chase LeMay demonstrated a high level of preparation at the end of the two years of studying on the Program, successfully passing exams and defending their master's theses. This year, students presented the results of their research on political and legal problems and prospects for preventing arms race in outer space (Sarah Erickson) and the phenomenon of low yield nuclear weapons as a threat to global strategic stability (Chase LeMay).

On June 18-26, 2022, PIR Center held XXI International School on Global Security. The School was held in Zvenigorod, Moscow region, a town rich in unique monuments of the Russian spiritual culture and military glory. XXI International School on Global Security was organized in partnership with MGIMO University as a part of the implementation of the joint project “Global Security, Strategic Stability and Arms Control” (implemented by PIR Center and MGIMO within Strategic Academic Leadership Program “Priority 2030”), as well as with grant support from the Presidential Grants Fund, Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund and Russkiy Mir Foundation.

PIR Center extends submission deadline for scholarship covering part of the tuition fee for the International Dual Degree M.A. Program Global Security, Nuclear Policy, and WMD Nonproliferation (developed jointly by MGIMO University, PIR Center and Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, USA, MIIS), until July 15, 2022.

On June 19, the official opening of the XXI International School on Global Security took place. The director of PIR Center Vladimir Orlov and the coordinator of Education & Training Program of the PIR Center Elena Karnaukhova addressed the students of the School with a welcoming speech. He stressed the importance of holding face-to-face scientific and educational events and suggested to forget about "zooms" for a while, and tune in to active, live communication. The participants of the School will have an exciting 9 days full of discussions on pressing issues of global security.

On June 18-26, 2022, in Zvenigorod, Moscow region, XXI PIR Center International School on Global Security for Young Professionals from Europe and CIS countries will take place. According to the established tradition, as part of the closing ceremony, a meeting of PIR Alumni Community will be held. We will be glad to see our colleagues, friends and partners, all those who inspire us to new achievements and projects!

The result of the first trimester of 2022 for PIR Center was the international expansion of the PIR Alumni Community. Thus, the PIR Center Advisory Board was joined by Dayan Jayatilleka, the former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation (2018-2020) and now a columnist of the business newspaper "Daily FT" and Sehlare Makgetlaneng, a visiting professor at the School of Public Studies of Northwestern University and researcher at the University of Limpopo, South Africa.

The International Dual Degree M.A. Program “Global Security, Nuclear Policy and WMD Nonproliferation”, developed jointly by PIR Center, MGIMO University and Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, USA (MIIS), is still open to new applications from young experts in global security who plan, through acquiring the master’s degree, to gain professional knowledge and skills in nuclear nonproliferation, disarmament, arms control, strategic stability, and the nuclear factor in international relations in general. Against the backdrop of aggravating US-Russian relations, interest in the Program does not fade away but continues to grow every year.

PIR Center will hold a Midweek Brainstorming Session - informal expert seminar on "The Possible Role of the P5 in Strengthening Strategic Stability" on April 21, 2022. Can the P5 process go further and become a successful format for discussing strategic stability issues? What mechanisms can be developed for this? What challenges does the nuclear five face? The keynote presentation will be delivered by Sofya Shestakova, a PIR Center intern and a student at Kemerovo State University. The seminar will be held from 17:00 to 19:00 (Moscow Time, GMT+3) via Zoom platform.

PIR Center launches the contest for participation in XXI International School on Global Security for Young Professionals from Europe and CIS countries. The event will be held on June 18-26, 2022, in Zvenigorod, Moscow region. This year, the agenda of the School will encompass challenges and threats to, as well as opportunities for enhancing Eurasian security in current geopolitical and technological conditions.
