Until arriving at the Carnegie Endowment in January 2002, George Perkovich was deputy director for programs and director of the Secure World Program of the W. Alton Jones Foundation. He oversaw a total of $26 million in annual grantmaking and also designed and implemented initiatives to further the board’s mandate of reducing the risk of nuclear war. Biography :

Steven Pifer is a senior fellow at the Brookings Center on the United States and Europe, where he focuses on arms control, Russia and Ukraine. He is also a senior adviser (non-resident) with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He has offered commentary regarding Russia, Ukraine and arms control issues on CNN, Fox News, CNBC, BBC, National Public Radio and VOA, and his articles have appeared in the Washington Post, International Herald Tribune and Boston Globe, among others. A retired Foreign Service Officer, his more than 25 years with the State Department focused on U.S. relations with the former Soviet Union and Europe, as well as arms control and security issues. He served as deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs with responsibilities for Russia and Ukraine (2001-2004), U.S. ambassador to Ukraine (1998-2000), and special assistant to the president and senior director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia on the National Security Council (1996-1997). In addition to Ukraine, he served at the U.S. embassies in Warsaw, Moscow and London as well as with the U.S. delegation to the negotiation on intermediate-range nuclear forces in Geneva. Pavel Podvig is an affiliate and former research associate at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. Before coming to Stanford in 2004, he worked at the Center for Arms Control Studies at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), which was the first independent research organization in Russia dedicated to analysis of technical issues related to arms control and disarmament. In Moscow, Podvig was the leader of a major research project and the editor of the book Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces (MIT Press, 2001). In recognition of his work in Russia, the American Physical Society awarded Podvig the Leo Szilard Lectureship Award of 2008 (with Anatoli Diakov). From 2000 to 2004, Podvig worked with the Program on Science and Global Security at Princeton University, and earlier with the Security Studies Program at MIT. His current research focuses on the Russian strategic forces and nuclear weapons complex, as well as technical and political aspects of nuclear nonproliferation, disarmament, missile defense, and U.S.-Russian arms control process.

Podvig received his degree in physics from MIPT and his PhD in political science from the Moscow Institute of World Economy and International Relations. Since 2001, Podvig has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. He is a member of the APS Committee on International Freedom of Scientists and is serving as the Chair of the Committee in 2008.

Born on May 12, 1954 in Vologda. In 1976 he graduated the Serpukhov High Military Command School. In 1987 he graduated the Dzerzhinsky Military Academy. In 1976–2006 served in the Strategic Missile Forces at various positions, including First Deputy Chief of Staff of the SMF. Lt.Gen. (res.) Ponomarev is an author of a number of scientific publications and has recently defended his doctoral thesis. Since August 2006 he joined the Federal Space Agency as the head of the Combined Department of Space Activities Management. In 2008 he was promoted to be the Deputy Head of the Agency. As Minister for Economic Affairs and member of the EU's ECOFIN-council 1990–1992, Mr. Rasmussen was the Danish negotiator of and signatory to the Maastricht Treaty.
