Deputy Defence Minister Speaks at PIR Center Summer School

MOSCOW, JULY10, 2013. PIR PRESS – «Russia and the United States of America can reach an agreement on all questionable issues including anti-missile defense problem if the dialogue is held on the cooperative basis without any attempts to impose one’s stance on arguable questions». - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Anatoly Antonov, Deputy Defense Minister of Russian Federation, member of PIR Сenter Advisory Board.

On  July 9, 2013  participants of PIR Center International Summer School on global security met with the Deputy Defense Minister of Russian Federation Anatoly Antonov. The meeting was dedicated to common security challenges and international military cooperation in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Deputy Defence Minister spoke on key issues of Russian military diplomacy, among which can be mentioned the implementation of the New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty), missile defense system, multilateral and bilateral military security partnership in the Eurasian space. “Russia and the USA can reach an agreement on all questionable issues including anti-missile defense problem if the dialogue is held on the cooperative basis without any attempts to impose one’s stance on arguable questions” remarked Anatoly Antonov while commenting the anti-missile defence problem.

Apart from this, Anatoly Antonov commented on the issue of universalization the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) signed in 1987. Deputy Defence Minister reminded that Russian Federation has more than once voiced support of the universalization of the treaty that could have invested in the process of global and regional security consolidation.

In the final part of his speech Mr. Antonov told about progresses and problems in military cooperation and security provision in the post-Soviet space. Anatoly Antonov stressed the importance of further strengthening of the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) potential, especially taking into consideration the forthcoming withdrawal of troops of the International Security Assistance Force from Afghanistan. He emphasized that at present Russia allots considerable funds for the modernization of the armed forces of its allies in CSTO. The final part of the meeting was held in the Q&A form.

Before the meeting with the Deputy Defence Minister the participants of the Summer School visited the memorial office of Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov. Up to 1987 other USSR Defence Ministers  also worked in this office. The visitors learned some little known facts from Zhukov’s life, saw precious historic documents and got understanding of the functioning of the Ministry in Zhukov’s times.
