Russian foreign policy was discussed at the Trialogue Club International

ZVENIGOROD, OCTOBER 22, 2020. PIR PRESS. “The world is now in a state of transformation, and during this period of uncertainty and turbulence realistic analysis and foreign policy planning is more important than ever, especially for Russia”, ‒ Oleg Stepanov, Director of the Foreign Policy Planning Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

On September 28, 2020, an extended meeting of the Trialogue Club International was held on a subject of “National Interests and Foreign Policy of Russia”. For the first time, meeting was held in a combined format, being realized on the XX Anniversary International School on Global Security platform in Zvenigorod. This conceptual innovation created an opportunity to join both for members of the Trialogue Club International and students of the School - representatives of leading universities, young scientists, experts, military officers, and diplomats from Russia and the CIS countries. The meeting was traditionally held in English.
 
In his opening remarks, Vladimir Orlov, PIR Center Director and Founder, President of the Trialogue Club International, mentioned the importance of mixed discussion and educational platform.  Such approach provides a unique opportunity for open dialogue and exchange of views between representatives of the diplomatic corps and young professionals with their fresh ideas and researches.

Oleg Stepanov, Director of the Foreign Policy Planning Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave a keynote speech. The co-chairs of the Club Evgeny Buzhinsky and Elena Chernenko were moderators of the meeting. The meeting was also attended by PIR Center staff and experts, representatives of the diplomatic corps from Austria, Hungary, Germany, India, Italy, Finland, Switzerland, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
 
During report presentation, Oleg Stepanov outlined his vision regarding modern world order, contextualized by the crisis of international law system, growing uncertainty and defragmentation of the political landscape.  In this context relevance of existing instruments for peace and stability are diminishing, nuclear weapon becomes topical and new major conflicts between states are arising.
 
Facing all-out antagonism during the pandemic times, Russia's initiatives being realized on the basis of UN international platforms, G20 Summit, BRICS and ASEAN are intended to mitigate global challenges.
 
The meeting further proceeded with interactive Q&A session where an active part took members and guests of the Club, as well as participants of the PIR Center International School.

Burning issues of the current global agenda were addressed to the speaker from the part of Indian Ambassador to Russia Venkatesh Varma, Defence Attache of Embassy of Switzerland Bruno Russi, and Deputy Head of Finish Mission Marja Koskela. The PIR Center consultant Albert Zulkharneev also added his remarks to Stepanov’s speech.
 
The School participants had the floor as well: BA student of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) Maria Bondareva, PhD student of the Moscow State University Elena Karnaukhova, graduate of the MGIMO Daria Pakhomova, and Deputy Head of the Department of Linguistics at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI Elena Tsyvkunova.  
 
The discussion turned out to be extremely fruitful and contributed to the establishment and strengthening of the dialogue between officials and representatives of departments with the young generation of experts and diplomats.
