July 13. MOSCOW. PIR PRESS. On July 5, PIR Center’s Director Dr Vladimir A. Orlov gave an interview to Jade McGlynn, senior researcher at the Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, for her new book about the Ukrainian crisis, which will be published in March 2023 by Polity Publishing house.

During the interview a number of issues were discussed: the reasons for the beginning and the course of the special military operation, the reasons for the failure of diplomacy at different levels and stages, the reaction of the Russian and foreign public to the current situation. Dr Vladimir A. Orlov noted that the Russian side initially clearly outlined the scope of its interests. Therefore, it was rather strange to see the misunderstanding and disregard of these interests on the part of the United States, a country in which the Monroe doctrine proclaiming the entire Western hemisphere as a sphere of American influence is still valid. Dr Vladimir A. Orlov also noted with regret that even the Geneva summit, which had many hopes, did not lead to an improvement in relations between the countries. The interview was conducted in a mutually respectful manner.

The interviewer demonstrated interest in the topic and openness to different positions.
