National Research Nuclear University MEPhI

Founded in 1942.

It is one of two first national research universities in Russia. Its history starts from the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Ammunition, which trained nuclear industry personnel. In 1945, it was renamed the Moscow Mechanical Institute, and in 1953 — the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI). Since 2003, Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (State University). In 2009, the university became one of the winners of the federal competition for the status of a national research university and was renamed the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. Open pool reactor is located on the territory of the university.

Outstanding scientists, including Academician Igor V. Kurchatov, the head of the USSR atomic project, participated in the creation and formation of MEPhI. Six Nobel Prize laureates — academicians Nikolay G. Basov, Andrei D. Sakharov, Nikolay N. Semenov, Igor E. Tamm, Ilya M. Frank, Pavel A. Cherenkov worked at the MEPhI Research Institute.
