Born on May 22, 1957.

In 1979, Pavel K. Baev graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University on the specialty “Economic Geography of Foreign Countries”. In 1979–1992, he worked in the Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR, and then at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1992 Pavel K. Baev has worked at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Norway. In 1995–2001, he was the Editor of Security Dialogue, PRIO’s policy-oriented quarterly journal. In 1999–2005, he was a member of PRIO Board. In 2002–2004, he was the head of PRIO Foreign and Security Policies program. In 2002–2005, Pavel K. Baev was the head of a working group at the Center for the Study of Civil War (CSCW), Oslo, Norway. Since 2006 he has been a Research Professor at PRIO. Since 2011 he has been a Senior Non-Resident Fellow at the Brookings Institutions, Washington DC, USA. Since 2013 he has been a Senior Associate Fellow at the Institut Francais des Relations Internationales (IFRI), Paris, France.

Research interests of Pavel K. Baev include Russian military reform, energy aspects of Russian-European relations and post-Soviet conflicts in the Caucasus and the Caspian region.
