Born on December 30, 1938.
Jayantha Dhanapala earned a Bachelor’s degree with honors in Social Sciences at University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and a Master’s degree in International Relations at American University, Washington D.C., USA. He studied Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, UK. He worked at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS), California, USA. Jayantha Dhanapala was the first visiting professor of the Department of International Law and Human Security at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Vancouver, Canada. In 1984–1987, he was the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1987–1992, he was the Director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR). In 1995–1997, he was the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the USA. In 1998–2003, he was an Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs. As a Sri Lankan diplomat, Jayantha Dhanapala served in London, Beijing, Washington D.C., New Delhi, and Geneva, as well as represented Sri Lanka at numerous international conferences, presiding over several of them, including the 1955 Review and Extension Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons. In 2006, he was an official candidate for the post of the Secretary-General of the United Nationsl. Jayantha Dhanapala is a member of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) Governing Board, Stockholm, Sweden, and the Board of Sponsors of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, USA.
