In 1956–1992, Yuri K. Nazarkin worked in the system of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR/Russia, for about two decades of which — on issues of disarmament and nuclear nonproliferation. He contributed to drafting the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), the Treaty on the Prohibition of the Emplacement of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction on the Sea-Bed and the Ocean Floor and in the Subsoil thereof (the Seabed Treaty), etc. In 1987–1989, Yuri K. Nazarkin was the Representative of the USSR to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland. He negotiated the draft of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Yuri K. Nazarkin was the Head of the delegation of the USSR during the US-Soviet negotiations resulted in the conclusion of the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-1 Treaty). In 1992–1995, he held the position of the Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. After retiring in 1996, Yuri K. Nazarkin has been engaged in teaching. He was Professor at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), Switzerland. In 2006–2021, he was Honorary Member of the Centre Russe d’Etudes Politiques, France. He is Professor and Honorary Doctor of International Relations (honoris causa) at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations (GSD), Switzerland.
