In 1980–1990, Ali Asghar Soltanieh was the Director of the Center for Nuclear Research at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI). Since 1982, he has been actively participating in the work of the NPT Review Conferences. In 1990–1996, he was the Director of the Education and Manpower Mobilization Department of the AEOI and the Nuclear Engineering Department of the Organization. In 1996–1999, he was the Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran and the Secretary of the National Authority for the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). In 1999–2002, he was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Iran to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1999–2002, he headed the Iranian delegation to the negotiations on the Protocol to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), delegate to the Geneva Conference on Disarmament. In 2002–2006, he was the Deputy Director General for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran. In 2006–2013, he was the Permanent Representative of Iran to the IAEA, the UN and other International Organizations in Vienna, Austria. Since 2016, he has been a Member of the Advisory Group on the Preparation of the History of the OPCW. He has served as President/Chairman of several international conferences and organizations such as UNIDO, the IAEA, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the G-77, the Non-Aligned Movement, etc. He has lectured and conducted research at the Arab Institute for Security Studies, Amman, Jordan, the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Austria Institut für Europa und Sicherheitspolitik (AIES), the International Peace Institute (IPI), Vienna, Austria; Webster University, St. Louis, USA; Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, Madrid, Spain, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA. In 2019, he joined the reference group of the UNIDIR project on the establishment of a Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone He takes an active part in international and regional conferences devoted to the problems of international security, WMD nonproliferation and disarmament. President of Vienna International Institute for Middle Eastern Studies (VIIMES).
