PIR Center Launches Contest for participation in the Final Seminar of Oral History of Nuclear Nonproliferation Project

PIR Center launches a contest for participation in the final seminar of the educational project Oral History of Nuclear Nonproliferation. The aim of the project is to preserve and transmit the memory of the role of Russian diplomats and the military in shaping the modern architecture of arms control, disarmament and nuclear nonproliferation. This project has no analogues in Russia and is intended to expand the understanding of the younger generation about the processes and events in such a traditionally non-public area as nuclear policy and diplomacy of Russia. The project will allow young international specialists to improve their skills in these issues, as well as share the results of their own research on topical issues of the nuclear nonproliferation regime.

The project involves remote and face-to-face stages. The remote stage of the project includes a series of video interviews (in Russian) with Russian participants of key events in the field of nuclear nonproliferation and arms control. The video materials will be sent to the winners of the competitive selection to prepare for the seminar with video interview experts, as well as posted on the educational portal of PIR Center NONPROLIFERATION.WORLD.

As part of the face-to-face stage, which will be held from December 3 to 5 in the Vladimir region, the winners of the contest will be able to discuss the results of the project and listen to leading Russian experts in the field of nuclear nonproliferation, arms control and disarmament during the round tables, as well as ask their questions. The seminar is expected to be attended by such prominent Russian experts as Lieutenant General, Chairman of the Executive Boardof PIR Center, Head of the Center for Political and Military Studies of the MSU Evgeny P. Buzhinsky, former Director of the Department for Security and Disarmament of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Professor of MGIMO of the Russian Foreign Ministry, former Ambassador of the Russian Federation to New Zealand Mikhail N. Lysenko, Lieutenant General, former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces Vasily F. Lata, former Adviser to the Director General of Rosatom Viktor P. Kuchinov, former Chief of the General Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces General- Colonel Viktor I. Esin and others. The seminar will be combined with the annual International Timerbaev Nuclear Debates, which traditionally take place in a hybrid format with the participation of high-ranking Russian and foreign experts as jury members.

The working language of the seminar is Russian.

Conditions of participation.

The contest includes an essay contest on the topic “The Role of Russian (Soviet) Diplomats and the Military in Creating and Strengthening Nuclear Nonproliferation Regime.” The subject of the application letter should be as follows: “HIS Essay Contest_Family Name”. The candidate’s CV must also be attached to the letter.

Optionally, the candidate can send any other materials that, in their opinion, will allow for a better assessment of the application (for example, a list of publications demonstrating interest in nonproliferation and arms control).

Requirements for the design of abstracts and essays: documents in Word format, Times New Roman font, size 12, interval 1.15, document title – the same as the subject of the letter.

The winners of the contest will be invited to the final seminar of the project in the Vladimir region, where they will be able to communicate in-person with the experts  and discuss topical issues of the nuclear nonproliferation regime on round tables.

The results of the competition will be announced on November 1.

The target audience of the project.

Participants from 18 to 25 years of age from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and other countries of the near and far abroad are invited to participate in the competitive selection. Travel from Moscow to the venue of the seminar in the Vladimir region, meals and hotel accommodation will be paid by the organizers. The costs of travel to Moscow and back for nonresident and foreign participants are covered by the sending party. Based on individual applications, the PIR Center may consider paying for air travel to participants from distant regions of Russia (Siberia, the Far East), as well as from CIS countries.

The project is being implemented with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund, as well as with grant support from the A.M. Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Support Fund.
