Born on December 3, 1928.
In 1952, Nikolai N. Ponomarev-Stepnoi graduated from the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Ammunition (now the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI) with a degree in “Design and Operation of Physical Devices and Installations”. Since 1956, he has been a lecturer at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). He worked at the Kurchatov Institute National Research Centre, at various times held the positions of Senior Laboratory Assistant, Senior Engineer, Senior Researcher, Head of the Laboratory, Head of the Department, Deputy Director. In 1987–1992, he was the First Deputy Director, and later, in 1992–2010, the Vice-President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Centre. Since 1979, Nikolai N. Ponomarev-Stepnoi has been the Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Atomic Energy”. He is a Member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Nuсlеаr Sсiеnсе аnd Еnginееring”. Nikolai N. Ponomarev-Stepnoi is a Member of the Nuclear Society of Russia. He is a Laureate of the Lenin and the State Prize, awarded two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor. Author of more than 200 scientific publications, including 11 monographs and textbooks. Main spheres of his professional activity include experimental and theoretical studies of processes in high-temperature reactors and direct conversion systems.
