Rector of MGIMO University. Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Member of the Board of the Russia Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. In 1983-1986, he was in the diplomatic service in Washington. In 1986, he was elected Dean of the Faculty of International Relations at MGIMO. In 1989, he was appointed the First Vice-Rector. Acad. Torkunov holds MA and two doctoral degrees in History and Political Science. Since 1992 Acad. Torkunov has served as Rector of MGIMO University. He is the author and co-author of more than 200 widely recognized scientific works, including a dozen of monographs. He has received state awards of many countries including Russia, Belarus, the Republic of Korea, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Japan, Mongolia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Hungary. He is a Member and Head of Section of the Academic Council of the Security Council of Russia, Member of the Presidential Commission for Science and Education, President of the Russian International Studies Association (RISA), Chairman of Moscow Region Civic Chamber, Co-President of the Russian Historical Society, Member of the Board of Trustees of Alexandrinsky Theatre, Member of the Writers’ Union of Russia.
