Presentation of Security Index Yearbook in Astana, Kazakhstan

October 3, 2024

Dr. Vladimir Orlov, Founding Director of PIR Center, visited Kazakhstan from September 30 to October 2, attending the Conference on Sustainable Development and Security in Eurasia, commemorating the 80th Anniversary of MGIMO University.

The event was honored by the presence of H.E. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Dr. Anatoly Torkunov, Rector of MGIMO University.

We are pleased to share some insights from Dr. Orlov, posted on his Telegram channel “Sobesednik-na-Piru”:

  • President Tokayev, opening the conference in Astana on Sustainable Development and Security in Eurasia, proudly referred to MGIMO. He is one of its distinguished graduates!
  • During his speech commemorating MGIMO’s 80th Anniversary, Tokayev noted the “unprecedented” decline in international security, which he compared unfavorably even to the Cold War period. He called for restoring strategic stability and emphasized the urgent need for a new “détente.”
  • At the same event, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, in President Tokayev’s presence, underscored the PIR Center’s significant contributions in collaborating with MGIMO on key reports, including those focused on Africa and the Persian Gulf. He also highlighted the newly released Security Index Yearbook displayed during his presentation.
  • The book exhibition, hosted at the Palace of Independence in Astana, prominently featured the latest joint publication by PIR Center and MGIMO, the Security Index Yearbook Global Edition. We present this vital work to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs representatives, the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies (KISI), academic leaders, and MGIMO’s partners within Kazakhstan’s university and research communities.
