XXII International School on Global Security for Young Professionals

On June 3-11, 2023, PIR Center will host the XXII International School on Global Security for young professionals. The event will be held in Zvenigorod, Moscow region. This year, the agenda of the School will be devoted to the security of key regions of the world in the era of global turbulence.

PIR Center International School on Global Security is an international educational platform for professional development and networking. It provides young professionals from Russia and foreign countries with an opportunity to enhance their understanding of modern global and regional security challenges and threats, develop the skills of situational analysis and joint project activities as well as provide a direct dialogue with potential colleagues, partners and friends. Participation in the School is an effective tool of the professional career growth and a vital instrument of shaping an agenda for cooperation on global and regional security issues.

Graduates of the School traditionally joins PIR Center’s international community of experts – PIR Alumni Community. Its most impressive accomplishment includes over 800 graduates of the main educational projects of PIR Center, such as International School on Global Security, training and lecture courses, an internship program, and International Dual Degree M.A. Program Global Security, Nuclear Policy and WMD Nonproliferation (developed jointly by MGIMO University, PIR Center, and Middlebury Institute of International Studies, MIIS, Monterey, USA), International Timerbaev Nuclear Debates, etc. Of these, more than 470 graduates have successfully completed PIR Center’s International School on Global Security. Throughout 22 years of its implementation, the School has received recognition in Russia as well as abroad.

Key formats of PIR Center International School on Global Security in 2023 include lectures, seminars, trainings, business cases, debates, panel sessions, situational analysis, strategic session (group work with mentors), meetings with officials, and cultural excursions.

Main thematic areas of XXII PIR Center International School on Global Security:

Regional aspects of WMD nonproliferation and regional challenges to the nuclear nonproliferation regime.
Development of the arms control regime, its future forms, regional aspects of the arms race.
Development of international cooperation on peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Cybersecurity issues in world politics.
Emerging technologies and their impact on regional and global security, the factor of high-tech and military-technical cooperation in world politics.
Trends in contemporary armed conflicts, hybrid wars, and transnational security threats: common and unique to regions of the world.
A new European security agenda.
Russian Foreign and Defense Policy.

The educational program of the School in 2023 will include at least 5 thematic blocks and at least 25 theoretical and practical classes.

The working language of the School is Russian. Since some sessions may be held in English, participants should demonstrate advanced knowledge of Russian and English.

Experienced practitioners and theorists in international relations, global and regional security will be invited as lecturers. Participants. 25 young international relations and global security specialists are invited to participate in the School, including diplomats, military officers, scholars, analysts, students, journalists, public figures, representatives of international organizations. The School is open to participants from Russia and foreign states with a strong interest in global and regional security developments.

Venue. The School will take place in the ancient Russian city of Zvenigorod, which is located near some of the unique landmarks of Russian history, culture and military glory. The cultural program of the School includes cultural excursions. Traditionally, participants visit the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the Patriot Park, the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, etc.

XXII PIR Center International School on Global Security is organized with the support from
Presidential Grant Foundation, Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, and MGIMO
University within the common project Global Security, Strategic Stability and Arms
Control (implemented jointly with MGIMO University as part of the Strategic Academic
Leadership Program “Priority 2030”).

The organizers bear the costs on accommodation and meals of the participants of the School. They are further responsible for providing the participants with the necessary handouts, literature, and sources to prepare for the School. Travel expenses (to Moscow and back) of non-resident participants are covered by the sending party. Based on individual applications, however, PIR Center may reimburse air travel expenses for participants from distant regions of Russia as well as the foreign countries.

Each participant is provided with the following: the School’s main (educational) program, handouts, reading materials to prepare for the School; opportunity to take part in receptions and excursions; accommodation in comfortable double rooms and three meals per day (buffet); transfers from Moscow to Zvenigorod and back, and visa support (when necessary).

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN XXII PIR CENTER INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON GLOBAL SECURITY

To take part in the contest for participants of the XXII International School on Global Security, applicants need to:

CV / Resume.

Letter of intent (in Russian), specifying the goals of participation in the School.

Recommendation / reference letter to the School from the head of the sending organization or its division / supervisor in Russian or English.

Additionally, applicants may attach any other supporting documents to strengthen their profile (such as a list of publications).

The email should be titled International School 2023 Application (indicated in the subject line).

3. RECEIVE e-mail confirmation from the School’s organizing committee that the application is accepted for consideration.

The organizers may ask for an interview with the candidate (to be held in online format).
