The Institute’s activity helped to achieve global nuclear equilibrium during the Cold War. VNIIEF initiated the USSR large-scale program of peaceful nuclear explosions. In 1962, it solved the unique problem of igniting and burning thermonuclear fuel in the absence of fissile materials.
