Born on April 13, 1953.
In 1975, Victor V. Sumsky graduated from the School of International Journalism of MGIMO University. In 1975–1983, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. From 1975 to 1979, he served at the Consulate General of the USSR in Medan, Indonesia. In 1982, he completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1983–1988, he worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, then from 1988 — at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, IMEMO RAS). He trained and taught at universities in the UK, the USA and the Philippines. From 2004 to 2010, he represented Russia on the Board of the European Association of Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS). Victor V. Sumsky is the author of three monographs, as well as many reports and articles published in Russia and abroad: in the UK, India, Indonesia, China, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, the USA, Japan, the Philippines. He translated modern Indonesian prose into Russian, and also participated in the preparation of tourist guides to the Philippines and Indonesia. He makes comments in the media: on the Voice of Russia radio and the Russia Today TV channel. In June 1, 2010, Victor V. Sumsky was posted to the position of Director of the ASEAN Centre of MGIMO University. In August 2010, he was awarded a commemorative badge of the Embassy of Indonesia in Moscow for his contribution to the development of Russian-Indonesian relations.
