MOSCOW. SEPTEMBER 18, 2025. PIR PRESS. «It is extremely significant for Russia to increase cooperation with Asian countries, following the concept of ‘Siberization of Russia’. Mongolia is currently one of the largest countries in terms of reserves of strategic minerals: copper, coal, uranium, lithium, titanium, and rare earth elements. In this regard, it is important to consider the current prospects for our cooperation and the risks that have accumulated since the collapse of the USSR», – Mr. Roman Kalinin, PIR Center Research Fellow.

On October 2, 2025, PIR Center jointly with MGIMO University will hold an expert seminar on the topic “Russia and Mongolia: Eternal Neighbors and New Partners”. Mr. Sergey Demin, Regional Director of the Rosatom International Network in East Asia and PIR Center Executive Board Member, will be a keynote speaker during the seminar. He will address a report on the topic “Russia and Mongolia: Eternal Neighbors and New Partners”. Mr. Sergey Demin will shed a light on key aspects of Russia-Mongolia cooperation, including projects in the field of atomic energy, renewable energy sources, and joint initiatives of maintenance the stability in the region.

Mr. Roman Kalinin, PIR Center Research Fellow, one of the authors of the PIR Center’s Report, entitled “Mongolia as a new center for the struggle for resources: Prospects for Russian-Mongolian cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, mineral exploration, and extraction”, and person in charge of the report, will also speak at the seminar. Topic of his speech will be devoted to promising areas of Russia-Mongolia cooperation in the field of atomic energy.

The fundamental issues of Russia-Mongolia cooperation, such as energy cooperation projects between Russia and Mongolia; the role of Mongolia’s “third neighbors” at the present stage; assessment of problems, hindering the growth of trade between Russia and Mongolia, as well as the aspect of balancing interests within the framework of “Siberization of Russia” policy, will be raised during the seminar.

The expected participants include experts from the Institute of Oriental Studies of RAS, the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of RAS, and the Institute for International Studies at MGIMO University.
