№ 58, 2024. PIR Center concluded the course on Nuclear Nonproliferation and awarded the most active students with printed copies of Ambassador Yuri Nazarkin’s memoirs, «On the START. On Africa. On Life: Memoirs of a Diplomat»

MOSCOW, DECEMBER 28, 2024. PIR PRESS. The concluding seminar of the course “Current Issues in Nuclear Nonproliferation” was held as part of the master’s program in “International Security,” jointly implemented by PIR Center and MGIMO University.

The Program’s Academic Director, Dr. Vladimir Orlov, summarized the winter semester results, emphasizing the students’ outstanding performance in both academic and extracurricular activities. He highlighted their analytical materials and volunteer contributions during PIR Center events.

Dr. Vladimir Orlov expressed his satisfaction with the students’ preparation level, emphasizing their contribution to organizing the 1^st “Russian-African Forum of Young International Relations Professionals on Security and Development,” which was conducted by PIR Center in partnership with Rossotrudnichestvo and MGIMO University. The program’s students’ active participation left a positive impression on the African participants of the forum.

During the seminar, plans for the spring semester were discussed, and awards were presented to distinguished students. The most active participants received printed copies of Ambassador Yuri Nazarkin’s memoirs, “On the START. On Africa. On Life: Memoirs of a Diplomat.”

In his book, the author speaks about his professional development as a Soviet diplomat, the beginning of his diplomatic career, and working on the African continent; he talks about multilateral diplomacy and international negotiations on disarmament issues and shares his experience of participating in Soviet-American talks on nuclear arms control, including the time when he was heading the Soviet delegation during the drafting of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, signed in July 1991. Throughout the book, the author recalls personal life – fascinating adventures, funny childhood and adolescence stories, unforgettable student years, travel trips, and inner emotional concerns and conclusions ruled by a life full of happy moments and dramatic events.

In conclusion, Dr. Vladimir Orlov congratulated the students on completing the semester and wished them success in their January 2025 examination session.
