March 5, 2023

MOSCOW. MARCH 5. PIR PRESS. «The General Assembly…Decides to proclaim 5 March as the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness…Invites all Member States, the organizations of the United Nations system, civil society, academia, the media and individuals to commemorate the International Day in an appropriate manner, including through all means of educational and public awareness-raising activities…», – from resolution 77/51 adopted by the UN General Assembly (2022).

On March 5 international community commemorates International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness. This initiative was proposed by Kyrgyzstan in 2021. On December 7, 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 77/51, which states: «The General Assembly, Recalling that the promotion of peace and security is among the main purposes and principles of the United Nations embodied in the Charter of the United Nations… Acknowledging the related importance of education as a tool for peace, security, disarmament and non-proliferation, Decides to proclaim 5 March as the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness…». The choice on this date was not accidental: on March 5, 1970, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) entered into force.

On this day, PIR Center is pleased to announce that the VI International Timerbaev Nuclear Debates will take place in April 2023. They will bring together students and young specialists on nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament from Russia and foreign countries, from domestic and foreign universities, specialized organizations. The program of the event provides for discussion of the most pressing issues of the current nuclear nonproliferation agenda.

International Timerbaev Nuclear Debates have been organized annually since 2020 in order
to commemorate Ambassador Roland Timerbaev, one of the main authors of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), who contributed a lot to raising a new generation of experts specialized in nonproliferation and disarmament issues. The purpose of the Debates is to provide young researchers with an opportunity to try their hand at discussing the most controversial issues in the spheres of nuclear nonproliferation, disarmament, arms control, as well as to offer new ideas and approaches to strengthening global security.

Traditionally, International Timerbaev Nuclear Debates are held in English. Their main characteristics is that each debating team (2 members) necessarily has its own mentor. From 2020 to 2022, 5 cycles of International Timerbaev Nuclear Debates took place. More information about them can be found in the special section of the Memory Gallery of Ambassador Roland Timerbaev on the PIR Center scientific and educational platform NONPROLIFERATION.WORLD.

At the moment, PIR Center together with its partners are working on the agenda of the VI International Timerbaev Nuclear Debates. Detailed information on dates, topics, participants and rules of procedure will be published later.
