№ 55 (103), 2026. „Integrity. Ideas. Courage“: this is a simple – and very complex – life hack for a 2026-model international journalist. Vladimir Orlov delivers a lecture as part of the Academy of Journalism educational program by Kommersant Publishing House

November 2, 2026

MOSCOW. NOVEMBER 2. PIR PRESS. Within the new cycle of the Academy of Journalism educational program organized by Kommersant Publishing House, Vladimir Orlov, PIR Center founder and director, Professor at MGIMO and academic supervisor of the joint PIR Center and MGIMO International Security MA program, gave a lecture. The program runs from October 5 to December 11, 2026 and is aimed at deepening young journalists’ competencies in digitalization, advanced data analysis, neural networks and artificial intelligence.

In his lecture on October 15, 2026, Vladimir Orlov concentrated on three components which constitute journalistic activities based on the “In the World – In the Country – In me” formula developed by the first editor-in-chief, Egor Vladimirovich Yakovlev, in Moskovskie Novosti. It was there that Orlov began his creative and professional career.

A 22-year-old Moskovskie Novosti reporter, Vladimir Orlov witnessed the August coup and was present in the White House from August 19 to August 21, 1991. He shared the details of what was happening at the epicenter of events – from the urgent arrival at the building and watching the approaching tanks to the atmosphere which reigned inside and to the collapse of the coup – at an open webinar dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the coup failure on the topic “Putsch. Orlov. Eyewitness. 3 days and 2 nights in the White House. 30 years later.” A detailed account of the September-October 1993 events, which Orlov observed and analyzed as a journalist, is provided in the expert seminar video titled “Rebellious days. (September 21 – October 4, 1993). Vladimir Orlov recalls.”

PIR Center and Kommersant Publishing House have enjoyed a long-standing and strong partnership. Back in 2004, Azer Mursaliev proposed a joint project to Vladimir Orlov, International Security Index (iSi). Over the course of several years, Yaderny Kontrol and Security Index by PIR Center published detailed data on the index’s dynamics and comments on it by PIR Center International Expert Group, from Germany to Saudi Arabia and from India to the United States, while, Kommersant released the actual “figures”, the index itself, in its dynamics, calculated based on the PIR Center methodology.

Delivering his lecture, Vladimir Orlov shared his vision of the main tasks and priorities for an international journalist. “I often recall the words of Alexander Bovin, the luminary of Russian international journalism. He was asked what an international journalist needed. He replied: “Integrity. Ideas. Courage”. It was said a long time ago, but it is still relevant today,” Vladimir Orlov recounted.
