In 2021, in memory of Gennady M. Evstafiev, an outstanding Soviet and Russian intelligence officer and diplomat, Lieutenant General of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, one of the patriarchs of nuclear nonproliferation, PIR Center established a competition for the Gennady M. Evstafiev Award, or the Evstafiev Award, for the best research work in the field of international security.
The competition is held annually among young Russian and foreign researchers whose works were published in the PIR Center’s Security Index and Security Index Occasional Paper Series this year or were accepted by the Commission on the Legacy of Lieutenant General Gennady M. Evstafiev.
The Evstafiev Series is a collection of research and practice-oriented publications by young, novice authors from Russia and abroad in the field of international security. The publications in frames of the Evstafiev Series are labeled accordingly. This papers can be found on the PIR Center website in the Security Index and Security Index Occasional Paper Series sections.
The competition looks for research papers dedicated to relevant issues of international security, predominantly the issues of WMD nonproliferation, arms control, strategic stability, cybersecurity, countering international terrorism, and regional security challenges and threats. All papers undergo mandatory external review and preliminary discussion at PIR Center scientific and educational seminars or in similar formats.
In frames of the competition, the submitted works are examined by the Commission on the Legacy of Lieutenant General Gennady M. Evstafiev. The Commission is chaired by Dr. Vladimir Orlov, Founding Director of PIR Center. The submitted papers must be exclusive; submission of the documents implies that the contestants agree to provide PIR Center with the copyright.
List of winners of the Evstafiev Award:
In 2022, the Evstafiev Award was implemented within the framework of the Oral History of Nuclear Nonproliferation project with the support of the Presidential Grants Foundation. Let us remind you that a series of video interviews was also produced (all interviews can be found here), as well as on December 3-5, 2022, a seminar was held in Vladimir in frames of the project. Support in these areas was provided by the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund.
In 2023, the competition is held within the framework of the project Global Security: A View from Russia for the Youth Around the World with the support of the Presidential Grants Foundation.
The Award this year is 300 000 rub.
